Real Madrid have finally accepted Lucas Vazquez's contract demands and are now close to securing the versatile winger's future.

Vazquez was expected to walk away as a free agent this summer after turning down Real's offer of a new contract. Los Blancos wanted him to accept a pay cut to help cope with the impact of COVID-19, but Vazquez felt he deserved a rise and talks looked to have hit a wall.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are sniffing around, but according to AS, Real have now accepted that Vazquez is worth some more money and have finally offered him the pay rise he was looking for.

The report, which is backed up by Marca, states that his £3.4m-a-year deal could now be upped to £4.4m, with Real realising that finding a player of Vazquez's versatility to replace him could actually be more costly.

Manager Zinedine Zidane has long made it clear he wants Vazquez to stay. Happy as a squad player, Vazquez has been a regular starter on the wing and even filled in at right-back before his season-ending knee injury.

Zidane has clearly lost faith in back-up right-back Alvaro Odriozola, who seems to be fourth in the pecking order behind Dani Carvajal, Vazquez and midfielder Federico Valverde, so bringing back Vazquez has always been high on the boss' wish list.

He's seen as a key squad player, and Real are now prepared to prove their worth to Vazquez with an improved contract.

The 29-year-old has always wanted to stay with Real, and now that he can get the pay rise he has been looking for, it would be a huge surprise to see him turn it down.

While £4.4m may not be a big figure in a squad which has players making in excess of £10m annually, the fact that Real are prepared to offer Vazquez a pay rise during a time in which they have asked everyone in their squad to take a cut is an enormous show of faith in the winger.

Will it be popular among the squad, whose spare wages have been used to line Vazquez's pockets? Well, that remains to be seen.
